The word 'gospel' means "good news." This is what distinguishes the message of Christianity from every other human philosophy or religion-the gospel is not good advice, but good news. It's not a program or a set of principles to follow; its a person to believe in. But this good news is only seen as really good news in light of the bad news.
Bad News: The God who created us looked out upon a world that was in rebellion against Him. He knew all of us were sinners and that no amount of good works could earn our way back into right standing with Him because God is just and must punish our sins. The punishment is death, eternal separation from God and all that is good in a place the Bible calls hell.
Good News: But God is also a God of love and does not want to punish us. So, in His great love for us, God the Father sent God the Son to earth in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus, who is both God and Man, lived the sinless and perfect life for us and freely gave His life upon a cross. On the cross, God the Father put our sins upon Jesus and He was punished in our place. He died for our sins, was buried, but three days later He rose again from the dead. And He told His disciples to go out and tell the story … that everyone who turns from their sin and receives Him as their Lord and Savior by faith alone receives the forgiveness of sins and the free gift of eternal life, a life of joy lived with and for God forever
